I am just so happy that we are doing that study on the benefits of video gaming. Finally, a story that doesn't involve kids learning to be violent from games and killing each other. But really, what's reported in this study is telling everyone else what us gamers have known all along. It really doesn't matter the genre, games require skill, be it from properly dropping the puzzle pieces into place in Tetris, memorization of clues to solve the mystery of Hotel Dusk: Room 215, even Pac-Man required quick wits, timing and if you got real good, memorization of the ghosts patterns. Studys have even shown that surgeons who play games before surgery not only do better, but finish faster (which works well for the surgery games like Trauma Center). There are other benefits of gaming as well. Those based on history can actually provide facts on what happened in certain points of time. World War Two games have you recreate famous war battles; and the Call of Duty series includes missions where you uncover actual facts about war time tactics we used to win. There are also the hand eye coordination of games, something that is put to the test with a rousing session of Guitar Hero. SimCity introduces young players to finances, city planning and politics. Games like the recently released Spore or Blast Works encourage people to use their imagination. Even Pokemon can provide kids with tactical thinking skills as they decide which creature to use to best defeat an enemy. Then there is the social aspect of gaming. Amany fraternity parties had at least one TV going with Guitar Hero 2 being played out by a large group of people. The Wii has succesfully brought the family into the hobby with games like Wii Sports. I know not all games are as beneficial as others, mostly fighting games and the Halo series, but more games are than are not. I guess what I'm saying is that I know a lot about video games, they're more beneficial than harmful, and hopefully everyone will someday realize that stories reported about how such and such school shooter was influenced to to kill by playing games is just bogus.
